Mothers face a lot of pressure from unrealistic expectations for being a “perfect mother”. From raising kids, being a good spouse, doing house chores, and still having time for self-care. Working moms have additional challenges at work and managing time effectively. These challenges leave moms (especially working moms) overwhelmed, stressed, and burnt out.

When I became a mom, I had the misconception that I should put my kid’s needs first to be a good mom. I felt guilty every time I did something for myself, even taking a shower! These made me feel tired, stressed, and grumpy. I was always in a bad mood and easily got impatient.

Until one day, my daughter was having tantrums, and I was so exhausted and overwhelmed, I just yelled at her and burst into tears 😭. At that moment, I realized that I had been taking myself for granted because I was so busy looking after my kid and working a full-time job. I felt awful for taking out my stress on my kid, so I decided to start taking care of myself.

Working moms juggle a lot of things, so taking even a short time for self-care is essential. Studies conducted on working moms show that self-care is related to higher levels of motivation, satisfaction with life, and positive affect. Self-care has also been associated with positive work-related outcomes.

While it’s natural to feel guilty at first, doing activities for self-care is important for a mom’s well-being. Below are 7 ways working moms can fit self-care into their busy schedules.

1. Schedule a “Me Time”

Even if it’s just for 15 minutes or an hour if you want, make time for something you enjoy. Whether it’s reading, watching a show, listening to music, or any hobby you love. Start slow, do it maybe once or twice a week, until you can manage to do it daily. Schedule it in your calendar and set a reminder so you will be more motivated to do it.

2. Enjoy a Guilt-Free Treat 🍫☕👗💄

Treat yourself to something nice like your favorite snack, a cup of coffee, a piece of new clothing, a skincare product, or make-up - anything that makes you feel good. Set aside a “self-care fund” from your monthly income, even if just a small amount that is enough to buy yourself a simple treat.

3. Take Time to Move Your Body 🏃🏻‍♀️

Physical activity improves mood and boosts energy. You don’t need to spend hours at the gym to get moving. A 5-minute walk or stretching can already make a difference.

4. Prioritize Rest and Sleep 💤

A good night’s sleep allows your body to recharge. Make sure to get quality sleep and take power naps. Go to bed early and avoid screen time for at least an hour before bed.

5. Set Boundaries with Work & Home 🚫

Self-care is also about what you don’t do. You don’t have to say “yes” to everything. Protect your time and energy and learn to say “no” when needed.

6. Ask for Help 🆘

While you want to be a supermom, you don’t have to do everything. Share responsibilities at home and at work. If possible, consider hiring a househelp or a nanny, or look for ways to delegate household tasks so you can have more time for yourself.

7. Connect with Others 📱

Reach out to a friend or family you haven’t talked to in a long time. Talk to your spouse or partner. Join support groups in an online community. Connecting with others makes us feel that we are not alone.

Take Care of Yourself, Now

Self-care is not selfish - it’s necessary for your well-being. A happy and well-rested mom would be more likely to take care of her child better than a stressed and exhausted mom. Now is the time to prioritize yourself. Let your cup overflow so you have the energy and love to pour into your child’s cup too. 💕
